Social Value

We understand the impact that each of us can make in our local communities. That’s why we always look to partner with our clients and supply chain, joining together to drive improvements.

Giving back to our local communities

From supporting youth football, to raising money for charity – it’s important to us that we help local initiatives.

Our Rail team have supported local hospices and charities such as Strathcarron Hospice, Barnsley Hospice and Diabetes UK, all of which are close to their hearts. To put this support into action, each colleague is also given one day’s paid leave each year to work with a local initiative to provide hands-on help.

Across our Rail operations and the wider NRL Group, how we continue to support our communities, people and planet is important to us. We’re delighted to share the positive impact this has made, in our second social value report.

Operating ethically and efficiently

We work to reduce air, light and noise pollution and distress as much as safely possible during our operations. We strive to procure the equipment and materials we need sustainably and ethically – while ensuring we keep waste to a minimum. We always respect the cultural heritage and history on our rail network when undertaking essential maintenance work.

Supporting Grassroots

Ensuring equal opportunity

It’s important to us that people from all walks of life are given the same opportunities to progress. This means ensuring that we’re doing all we can to attract applications from diverse backgrounds, working with our clients to identify opportunities to think differently.

It takes a village to support people in their time of need, and this support must be in the workplace as well as at home.

That’s why we have qualified Mental Health First Aiders in our team, and are proud to be a company supporter of the Lighthouse charity – which provides industry workers with free support with mental health and money struggles.

We’re keen to make this taboo topic as accessible as possible within our business and across our operations, always on hand to listen and connect people with the right resources.

Supporting the Armed Forces community

We’re proud to support active members of the military, their families and veterans – to help them find work outside of the Armed Forces. Knowing the wealth of transferrable skills they have accumulated during their active service, and their capability to apply these within other fields to gain new expertise.

That’s why it was important for us to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, in recognition to our open door policy that welcomes job applications from the armed forces community.

Creating the right environment for our colleagues to thrive

It’s important to us that no matter what role our colleagues play within the business, they feel empowered to make a difference and they enjoy coming to work every day. That’s why we wanted to anonymously survey our workforce across the NRL Group to better understand how they feel about working for us. We were delighted to find that 97% of colleagues thought it was a great place to work, earning us the official Great Place To Work® certification™ which we’re proud to display as it reflects our culture, the support we provide to our workforce and our commitment to operating ethically and honestly.
