What you can do for yourself

  • Talk about your feelings. Just being listened to can help you feel supported and less alone with any problems you’re going through and can offer a different view from whatever’s going on in your head.
  • Stay active. Physical activity is not only good for your body, it’s also great for your mind.
  • Get a good night’s sleep. Sleep and mental health are closely linked: mental ill-health can affect your sleep and poor sleep can affect your mental wellbeing.
  • Eat well. A balanced diet can improve your sense of wellbeing and your mood.
  • Practice mindfulness, a way to be fully engaged and present in the moment.

Supporting others

How to have a conversation with an individual about their mental health

  1. Encourage them to talk – people can find it difficult to talk about their mental health but it helps to have an open culture where conversations about mental health are routine and normalised. Ask simple, open and non-judgmental questions and let them explain in their own words how their mental health problem manifests and triggers.
  2. Listen to them and respond flexibly – everyone’s experience of a mental health problem is different so treat people as individuals and focus on the person, not the problem.
  3. Ensure confidentiality – people need to be reassured of confidentiality. It’s sensitive information and should be shared with as few people as possible. Discuss with the individual what information they would like shared and with whom.
  4. Encourage them to seek advice and support – people should speak to their GP about available support from the NHS such as talking therapy. Point the individual to the resources available, such as those listed on this hub. The Mind Infoline can also signpost people on to support.
  5. Reassure them – people may not always be ready to talk straight away so it’s important you outline what support is available and let them know your door is always open.
