As demand for skilled professionals continues to grow in the rail sector, providing opportunities for new talent to join the industry is more important than ever. At NRL Rail, we’re committed to supporting that journey, which is why we’re excited to welcome Effie Vogiatzi as our new Transport and Logistics Apprentice in our Barnsley team.
Creating new pathways through growth
Our business continues to expand its operational and contracting teams to support client projects and ensure compliance across our growing vehicle fleet and logistics operations. Effie’s role is part of this growth, adding essential support to our Barnsley team while providing her with hands-on experience and professional development opportunities.
For us, apprenticeships aren’t just about filling roles. They’re about investing in people, developing future capability and creating rewarding careers in an essential sector.
Why Effie chose a rail administration apprenticeship
When asked what attracted her to the rail administration apprenticeship, Effie explained:
“It offers the opportunity to build a long-term career in an important and ever-growing industry. I was interested in learning new skills, taking on new challenges and working as part of a team.”
It’s a clear reflection of why apprenticeships are so valuable. They combine practical experience with structured learning, helping individuals develop both confidence and competence in their roles.
First impressions of the rail industry
So, what does Effie think so far?
“My first impression of the rail industry is that it relies on strong teamwork and organisation from both contractors, hire companies and office staff to run efficiently. There is a strong focus on health and safety. NRL Rail is brilliant at encouraging staff to progress and develop their career and take on new training opportunities.”
This commitment to career development and safety is something we’re proud to champion across all areas of our business.
Looking ahead: skills and experience
Effie is enthusiastic about what’s to come during her apprenticeship:
“I am most looking forward to learning and improving the practical skills required for my role while gaining in-office experience alongside. I’m eager to build the knowledge and confidence needed for a long-term career in the rail industry.”
It’s great to see such ambition and passion for building a career within the sector.
A career change with purpose
Before joining NRL Rail, Effie worked in beauty retail, but was eager to take on a new challenge:
“I wanted to challenge myself by starting an apprenticeship, with the aim of developing the skills needed for a long-term career. With my background in customer service and the skills I developed during my A-level education, I thought this would be a good stepping stone for progression into an apprenticeship.”
It’s a great example of how transferable skills can open doors to entirely new career paths.
Beyond the office
When she’s not learning the ropes of the rail industry, Effie loves spending time with family and friends, enjoying Greek cooking, travelling, keeping active and discovering new places.
Supporting skills for the future
Effie’s journey is a perfect example of how apprenticeships can welcome new entrants and strengthen the rail workforce. At NRL Rail, we’re proud to offer these opportunities and play our part in developing future talent.
